What is the RIASEC Model?

The RIASEC model, developed by psychologist John Holland, categorizes people and work environments into six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. By understanding your dominant types, you can identify careers that align with your natural preferences, whether you're interested in car sales jobs, IT positions, or health care administration roles.

The Six RIASEC Personality Types

Each RIASEC type has distinct characteristics and career paths. Discover which types match your interests and strengths.

Realistic (Doers)

Enjoy working with animals, tools, or machines. Practical, physically strong, and mechanically inclined. Careers: automotive technician, electrician, construction worker, and other hands-on professions.

Investigative (Thinkers)

Enjoy activities involving thinking, organizing, and understanding. Prefer working with ideas and data. Careers: research scientist, data analyst, software developer, and engineer.

Artistic (Creators)

Enjoy creative activities such as art, drama, music, crafts, or writing. Prefer unstructured environments for self-expression. Careers: graphic designer, writer, musician, and architect.

Social (Helpers)

Enjoy helping people—teaching, healing, or providing services. Skilled with words and problem-solving through discussion. Careers: teacher, nurse, counselor, and social worker.

Enterprising (Persuaders)

Enjoy leading, persuading, and working toward goals or economic success. Confident and ambitious. Careers: sales manager, business executive, lawyer, and entrepreneur.

Conventional (Organizers)

Prefer structured, rule-regulated activities and working with data. Detail-oriented and organized. Careers: accountant, financial analyst, office manager, and database administrator.

How the RIASEC Assessment Works

The RIASEC assessment asks about your interests, preferences, and work style. Based on your responses, you receive a three-letter code representing your dominant types. This code matches you to careers and work environments suited to your strengths.

Did You Know?

Most people are a combination of two or three RIASEC types, not just one. Your unique profile helps you identify ideal career paths. For example, someone with SEC (Social, Enterprising, Conventional) might excel in human resources. To learn more about your personality, try our Big Five Personality Test or DISC Assessment.

Using Your RIASEC Results

Once you have your RIASEC code, look for careers that match your type. Career sites and resources use this model to help job seekers find suitable positions. Your code guides your search for technical, creative, or people-focused jobs.

Career Exploration by Type

Each RIASEC type corresponds to specific career clusters. Realistic types might pursue skilled trades; Social types often work in healthcare or education; Enterprising types may choose sales or management; Conventional types succeed in administration or finance.

RIASEC in Career Development

Career counselors and coaches use RIASEC to help clients identify paths and transitions. Understanding your type supports advancement and job satisfaction.

RIASEC in the Workplace
